Parental Leave
Any Guild
member taking parental leave must inform the company in writing at least four
weeks in advance of their planned leave period.
Once submitted,
in accordance with the Employment Standards Act the company has no right
to refuse you leave or to attempt to force you to change your parental
leave.
Despite this provision being enforceable
under B.C. law and contract language, the Guild recently had to defend a
Guild member from a manager's attempt to force their leave period to a different
date. Fortunately the member had done everything correctly,
including giving over two months' written notice, and is now on leave as
planned.
Any member planning on taking parental
leave must ensure they follow the correct procedures. Talk to your
union representative before submitting written notice.
